An Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are not new concepts. People have heard about them, and with each passing year, they are getting more and more recognized for the exceptional abilities they possess.

Today through this blog, I’ll explain what AI as a service and ML are and how they work. I hope you’ll learn something new.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

John McCarthy, the father of Artificial Intelligence, defines it as “the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, brilliant computer programs.”

Artificial intelligence, abbreviated as AI, refers to the simulation of human intelligence in programmed machines to think like humans. The term can be applied to any machine that shows traits associated with human skills, such as learning and problem-solving.

Ideal Characteristics of Artificial Intelligence

Machine Learning is a Subset of AI which covers the concept that computer programs can learn and adapt to new data without human assistance. A superior artificial intelligence can analyze the situation and the environment around them and take action to achieve specific goals or visions.

Understanding the Universe of Artificial Intelligence

The basic concept of AI is not clear to most people- the possible reason behind this is a wide misconception, as AI is displayed as a robot only in movies, etc. Even now, people think of AI as robots and some undiscovered technology beyond human reach. But this is far, far from the truth. AI is nothing as it is represented in big-budget movies or web series. It is the exact opposite of it.

The principle behind creating AI was to have a machine capable of carrying out minimal daily tasks as a human would- mostly a simple task. The goal of AI primarily includes mimicking human cognitive activities such as learning, reasoning, and perception.

Some people believe that innovators may be able to build systems that can exceed the need of humans to learn without any subject. But others disagree, as some cognitive judgments are the only response to a certain situation.

As technology advances, new changes may be expected to be seen in the industry. For example, machines that calculate or do numbering are no longer considered Artificial Intelligence as these are generally recognized as casual computer roles to perform. Slowly but steadily, AI as a service is also being provided by many companies that are advanced under modern technology company.

There is no doubt that Artificial Intelligence is evolving to benefit the tech industry.

Types of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence can be divided into two main categories; weak and strong.

Weak artificial intelligence is designed to carry out only one particular job. On the other hand, solid artificial intelligence performs tasks the way supposed to be carried out by a human. These tasks are more complex and challenging to complete; strong AI is manufactured to solve an issue without human personal intervention.

For example, self-driving cars and or machines in hospital operating rooms.

4 Types of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence can be further divided into four categories;

  • Reactive AI

This kind of AI uses algorithms to optimize the outputs after analyzing a set of inputs. For example, chess-playing AIs are reactive AI- that help to get the best strategy to win the game based on other player input. Reactive AI tends to give fair results, unable to learn; thus, if you pass the same information, you’ll get the same output.

  • Limited Memory AI

With limited memory AI, it can update itself on new data or by observing and adapt quickly to past experiences. The amount of updating is slow, and memory length is relatively short as well, so there are no chances of negative impact.

  • Theory-of-mind AI

While being the most advanced and modern of the previous two AI’s, Theory-of-mind AI is not self-aware. This AI is fully adaptive and can learn from past experiences as well, like limited memory AI. What’s surprising about this AI is that it can easily fool a ‘chatbot’ into thinking of it as a human.

  • Self-aware AI

Last but not least, Self-aware AI knows that it exists. This can only be understood in the coming time (fingers crossed). But scientists still firmly believe that it’ll never become conscious.

What is Machine Learning?

Machine learning is a subset of Artificial Intelligence.

I find this definition by Microsoft apt to explain machine learning: “It’s the process of using mathematical models of data to help a computer learn without direct instruction. This enables a computer system to continue learning and improving on its own, based on experience”.

Machine learning is primarily used to swiftly process vast quantities of data by utilizing algorithms. The thing with algorithms is that it changes frequently and gets better results. In short, over time, algorithms display better outcomes.

Let us explain it with an example; a manufacturing plant may collect data from machines and sensors on its network- which is beyond human capacity. Machine learning is then utilized to spot any corrections and work towards making them flawless.

There are many machine learning services that provide courses on machine learning process or share weekly blogs sharing detailed information.

How does Machine Learning work?

UC Berkely has divided machine learning work into three main parts;

Decision Process: In this category, machine learning is based on input data that can be labeled or unlabeled, making certain predictions or classifications.

To Detect Error: An error function predicts failures of derived results. Machine learning can check the accuracy by comparing both data if there are known examples.

Optimization Process: In this, if the model is suited to some other weight and it is concluded that it can sure get accurate results in that situation. Then the algorithm repeats this method until the accuracy has been met.
